Kenya's first cartoonist was Edward Gitau who drew the Juha Kalulu strip in the Taifa Leo in 1960. The cartoon strip continues to this day. He was followed by Terry Hirst who came to Kenya from England in 1965 to take up a teaching position at Kenya High School in Nairobi before he went on to set up the art department at the Kenyatta University. He also started several popular publications the most popular of which was Joe in the 1970s. Among its many contributors was Frank Odoi who passed on last year.
